How many shutter clicks?

April 14, 2010  |  Exif  |  1 Comment

I spent some time this morning at that bastion of camera tech geekdom and throw-more-expensive-equipment-at-the-problem, the nikon service center. There was a guy there who had driven in from Nelspruit and wanted to know how many shutter clicks his D2X’s had on them, and how many were safe before he had to upgrade the cameras. Anyway, the discussion between him and the salesperson devolved into tonal range differences between the D3 and the D3X and other geek speak that I was politely ignoring – I’m not really a gearhead. Don’t bother asking me about the different sensor sizes, types or even about tonal range (I prefer a smaller tonal range that looks more like film and less like digital), I have no idea.

Anyway, the reason for this post is just to mention that if you want to know how many shutter clicks your camera (or a camera you’re buying has had), download a free Exif reader called Opanda, open up a recent photo taken by that camera and the number will be near the bottom of the list.

The i{files} are a set of cards that were created for RE.INVENT I, laying out Andrea and I’s tricks, tips and techniques for shooting weddings. Small enough to fit into your pocket or camera bag and handy to pull out when you’re stuck at a wedding, or just feel like you are stuck in a rut and need some inspiration. We had them printed in the US and they arrived a bit late so they have been mailed to the participants in RE.INVENT I.

I see that Andrea sub-titled them, RE.INVENT for your pocket, which I think pretty much sums up what they are. At the moment there are no plans to produce extra copies for sale.

So RE.INVENT happened. 21 photographers descended on Forum Homini from as far away as Nigeria, Durban and Secunda for a jam packed day of wedding photography knowledge and fine food. The weather played along nicely and we got some killer bee images of our models, Gen and Greg.

I could tell you how great everything was, and how much everyone learned, or I could point you at their blogs.

Andrea and I are still going through the images everyone has sent through and are working on critiques. Thank you all for coming. Time to take that leap.

I just like it

You know, I will often say, “I like this image.” And Indrani will say, “Well, what is it that you like about it?” And my answer will be, “Well, I just like it.” That’s an egotistical perspective, and she points out that it really doesn’t matter what you yourself like. It’s important to analyze who you’re trying to reach with the image.

RE.INVENT

A blend of two distinct and very very different views on wedding photography in Africa. It is a workshop hosted by two photographers who have taken wedding photography, given it a good shake and developed unique styles of photography that have seen them shooting weddings throughout southern Africa.
