I spent some time this morning at that bastion of camera tech geekdom and throw-more-expensive-equipment-at-the-problem, the nikon service center. There was a guy there who had driven in from Nelspruit and wanted to know how many shutter clicks his D2X’s had on them, and how many were safe before he had to upgrade the cameras. Anyway, the discussion between him and the salesperson devolved into tonal range differences between the D3 and the D3X and other geek speak that I was politely ignoring – I’m not really a gearhead. Don’t bother asking me about the different sensor sizes, types or even about tonal range (I prefer a smaller tonal range that looks more like film and less like digital), I have no idea.

Anyway, the reason for this post is just to mention that if you want to know how many shutter clicks your camera (or a camera you’re buying has had), download a free Exif reader called Opanda, open up a recent photo taken by that camera and the number will be near the bottom of the list.
